In alignment with his political beliefs and vision, Ryan volunteers as a writer for several literacy and library advocacy groups, where his articles speak out candidly against the authoritarian push to ban books and close libraries.
If you are interested in this cause as well and are looking for ways to get involved, Ryan highly recommends you reach out to organizations like BookRiot, PenAmerica, and especially The Florida Freedom to Read Project and EveryLibrary. Links to some of these organizations appear below. They always need help and the number of book bans is only growing.
In 2022 alone, nearly 2,600 book titles were banned, representing a 40% jump from previous years.
This problem is not going away. The people behind these efforts are often organized, and just as often ignorant. By self admission, most will tell you that they have not even read the books they are trying to ban.
